The recent completion of the environmental restoration plan for the San Roque hillside, in the Mesa Mota area and visible from the Ring Road (Vía de Ronda), represents one of the most significant environmental actions promoted by the La Laguna City Council in recent years. This initiative constitutes a clear commitment to landscape restoration, ecosystem protection, and the enhancement of the natural heritage of the metropolitan area.
The project has enabled the restoration of a degraded space through the recovery of native plant species, soil improvement, and the integration of the landscape into an area that had previously suffered a considerable environmental impact. Beyond the visual improvement of the site, the intervention has an important educational and scientific component, as it transforms the San Roque hillside into a true natural laboratory for the study of local flora and fauna, fostering environmental education and public awareness.
One of the added values of this initiative is the creation of a space for leisure, training, and landscape interpretation, designed for the responsible enjoyment of citizens and for the development of activities related to knowledge of the natural environment. This type of action demonstrates that environmental restoration can go hand in hand with the social use of the territory, generating ecological, economic, and cultural benefits.
From a strategic perspective, the project promoted by the La Laguna City Council also serves as an excellent example of how investment in the environment can become an effective tool for territorial promotion. Landscape recovery strengthens the identity of the area, enhances its attractiveness, and opens up new opportunities for the development of initiatives linked to the primary sector, research, and a sustainable local economy.
This model of intervention is perfectly transferable to other areas of the municipality and the metropolitan area, such as the so-called Finca de los Abuelos, a peripheral area of approximately 100,000 square meters located in Valle Colino. The application of environmental restoration criteria, the promotion of local agricultural and livestock activities, research in R&D&I, and the promotion of zero-kilometer products would make it possible to consolidate a space of public and social interest, capable of generating employment and energizing the primary sector in its broadest sense.
The proximity to the University of La Laguna campus further strengthens the potential of this type of project by facilitating collaboration among public administrations, private entities, universities, and research centers. This synergy is key to advancing toward a development model based on sustainability, knowledge, and the valorization of natural resources.
Initiatives such as the restoration of the San Roque hillside—or their potential application in projects such as the Playa Paraíso Technological Park—demonstrate that landscape recovery not only protects the environment, but also boosts the local economy, improves quality of life, and reinforces collective commitment to a more sustainable future.
