Tenerife becomes the world capital of the sea with the 7th Meeting of the Seas

Between 11 and 13 March this year, the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre hosted a series of information sessions on vocational training (FP) activities offered at secondary schools in the southern region of Tenerife. The event, organised by Arona Town Council and the Canary Islands Government, brought together more than 1,600 students interested in learning about the educational and employment opportunities offered by FP.

Representing the ongoing initiatives for the development of Playa Paraíso, Miguel Muñoz, project coordinator, attended the conference on 12 March with the aim of finding VET students interested in participating in training placements. He also handed out a summary dossier to the students and directors of the vocational training centres in the region, highlighting the importance of these training experiences as support for architectural draftsmen and other professionals.

During the conference, lectures were held on ocean salinity, one of the central themes of this 7th Meeting, as experts warned that climate change could alter this vital balance in the seas, with serious consequences for ecosystems and the human food chain. The value of locally sourced produce was also highlighted in the gastronomic tastings, featuring renowned chefs such as Ángel León, which served to emphasise the role of cuisine as a link between humans and the sea.

The programme began on 29 June in Los Cristianos with activities open to the public and continued with various presentations until its conclusion on 2 July. The event was made possible thanks to the support of the Cabildo de Tenerife, the Arona Town Council and entities such as Turismo de Tenerife, as well as the support of Vocento, the organiser of the conference.

In parallel to his participation in the Meeting, Miguel Muñoz recalled the history of the Playa Paraíso Technology Park, a project that began in 2010 with the work of architects such as AMP Arquitectos, Annika Schollin, Juan Pedro Salcedo and Jerónimo Padrón. In 2015, the young architect Alejandro Díez Martín joined the team and is currently leading the drafting of the proposal together with the team. The design of the marina is being led by Jerónimo Padrón López, who holds a PhD in architecture from the University of Venice. Both projects will be officially presented at two planned events: one at the University of La Laguna and the other at the Costa Adeje Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA).

In addition, coordination is underway with Canarian universities to involve undergraduate and vocational training students in internships to prepare the sectoral reports needed to support the technical, economic and environmental viability of both proposals. These actions are part of the 2025 marketing strategy published on the park's official blog, which also mentions the recent visit to Gran Canaria and the London Chamber of Commerce in 2018, key moments in the internationalisation of the project and in the search for institutional and financial support.

The development team, which has the support of entities such as Clairfield Corporate Finance, has set out to turn Playa Paraíso into a hub for technological innovation, sustainable port development and marine education. The death of Patrycja Rebech, model and corporate image of the project, in June 2024, was also remembered with affection and respect on the official blog.

The VII Encuentro de los Mares thus closed its most "salty" edition, as some media outlets described it, emphasising the urgency of protecting the oceans, diversifying fish consumption, and strengthening the connection between scientific research, sustainable cuisine, and the blue economy. The active participation of initiatives such as those promoted by Playa Paraíso shows that the future of the sea is also being built locally, with a global vision and shared responsibility.
