In August 2025, the City Council of San Cristóbal de La Laguna gave a decisive boost to the municipal Land Bank, an initiative that has been active since 2021 in conjunction with the Terrae Network. Through an agreement with the public company GESPLAN, technical advice on land use planning, urban feasibility and agricultural regulations will be strengthened. The aim is to better meet growing local demand in the face of a limited supply of available unused land, facilitating identification, georeferencing and intermediation with potential local growers.
According to statements by the mayor and the councillor for Rural Development, La Laguna has areas with vital agroecological potential, such as Valle de Guerra, Tejina and Punta del Hidalgo. The strategy is part of a project for food sovereignty, landscape preservation, recovery of native livestock breeds and revitalisation of the rural environment, with technical assistance adapted to the local context and a sustainable approach.
At the regional level, in July 2025, the Canary Islands Parliament approved a non-binding motion to create a Canary Islands Land Bank, with the aim of mobilising the approximately 85,000 hectares of unused agricultural land, out of a total potential of up to 744,000, of which only 30% is under cultivation.
The bank will operate as a one-stop shop, offering secure transfer or rental contracts, mapped data on available farms, indicative reference prices and prioritisation of young people, women and ecological projects or those linked to traditional agri-food heritage.
In La Laguna, on 6 August 2025.
The coordinator,
Miguel Muñoz
