On Monday, 22 September 2025, I had the opportunity to attend the economic conference organised by CEOE Tenerife, held at the Hotel Mencey in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The meeting brought together institutional, business and professional representatives from different sectors with the aim of analysing the current situation of the Canary Islands' economy and discussing the challenges and opportunities facing the islands.
During the sessions, topics of great relevance were addressed, such as the blue economy and its potential to diversify the archipelago's economic model, the bureaucratic overload that limits business development, the underground economy, and the lack of skilled labour that affects the growth of the productive fabric. The importance of dual vocational training as a key tool for preparing young people for the real labour market was also highlighted, as was the need to strengthen the competitiveness and profitability of the agricultural and industrial sectors.
The presentations paid special attention to the situation in the Canary Islands countryside, affected by drought and the loss of profitability of traditional crops such as potatoes, vines and bananas. The need to take advantage of desalinated and recycled water at sustainable prices, promote agricultural modernisation and protect the landscape as an essential element of the identity and attractiveness of the Canary Islands was discussed. The role of the Tenerife Island Council in supporting the business and industrial sector was also analysed, with lines of financing and programmes for modernising corporate image, as well as investment in industrial estates, including that of Güímar.
The presentations highlighted the importance of the Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF) in promoting investment, the use of waste as a source of employment and industrial automation as part of the productive future of the islands. The need to reduce over-regulation, which hinders competitiveness, and to promote effective measures against the underground economy was emphasised. Among the most prominent speakers were representatives of the CEOE Tenerife, Femete and the Cabildo de Tenerife. Of particular note were the speeches by Ángela, president of an agricultural cooperative, who defended the role of agriculture as the basis of the circular economy, and Juan Antonio, from Femete, with whom I had the opportunity to talk at the end of the event about the importance of technical training and employability in the industrial sector.
In addition to offering a detailed analysis of the economic reality of the archipelago, the conference was a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and establish contacts with professionals committed to the economic and social transformation of the Canary Islands. This meeting reaffirms the need to strengthen collaboration between the public and private sectors, commit to sustainable innovation and balance the weight of tourism with the promotion of industry and the primary sector.
These reflections are in line with the philosophy and projects we develop at the Playa Paraíso Technology Park, where we actively work on initiatives linked to the blue economy and sustainability in the municipality of Adeje. We are currently in the preparation phase of our second dissemination conference, where we will present two strategic projects for the Playa Paraíso destination, under the direction of our responsible architects. During this upcoming meeting, a 3D model of both proposals will be exhibited and presented to national and international investors, public administrations, academic institutions and the general public as part of our commitment to sustainable development and local innovation.
In summary, participation in these conferences has allowed us to broaden our vision of the challenges of economic development in the Canary Islands and strengthen ties with key players in the business and academic sectors. These experiences encourage us to continue advancing in our mission to promote a growth model based on innovation, sustainability and cooperation.
In La Laguna, 7 October 2025.
