Mercadona and the promotion of new opportunities for business development

The story of a leading Spanish company such as Mercadona invites us to reflect on the importance of ideas, hard work, planning, innovation and collaboration in promoting new opportunities for economic and social development. The evolution of this company, under the leadership of its chairman, Juan Roig Alfonso, is an example of how a business initiative can grow, become firmly established and generate wealth and employment over time, developing into an organisation of major importance both in Spain and internationally.

Mercadona’s results for 2025 reflect the scale the company has achieved, with turnover reaching €41.9 billion and net profit amounting to €1.729 billion. In addition to demonstrating the strength of its business model, these figures highlight the importance of having a clear strategy, efficient management and a long-term vision. However, behind these financial results lies a history of business decisions, adaptation to market changes and a continuous search for improvements in processes and customer service.

Through the business initiative “Parque Tecnológico Playa Paraíso 2010-Adeje” (Playa Paraíso 2010-Adeje Technology Park), we would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the development of our own project, from its origins to the present day, and share some of the possibilities we are exploring to move it forward. We recognise that major projects require time, perseverance, planning and the involvement of people and organisations that share a vision for the future. We therefore consider it important to make our work known, explain our objectives and explore potential avenues for cooperation with business organisations, professionals and institutions that could contribute to its development.

Our initiative encompasses two areas of development which, although different in nature, share a common focus on innovation, research and the creation of new opportunities for the municipality of Adeje and its surrounding area. The first concerns a proposed technology park focused on water management and the development of solutions that could help improve the use of water resources. In a region such as the Canary Islands, where water is an especially valuable resource, we believe that research, technology and cooperation between professionals can play an important role in identifying sustainable alternatives.

The second area focuses on a proposed future sports marina incorporating a marine research centre near Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife. The initiative aims to explore the possibilities of combining nautical activities with research, innovation and knowledge of the marine environment, taking into account the characteristics of the surrounding area and the opportunities that appropriate planning could create. Both initiatives form part of a broader vision for development that seeks to generate economic activity, encourage professional collaboration and help diversify opportunities across the region.

Throughout this journey, we have benefited from the involvement and work of professionals who have contributed their expertise to the development of these proposals. They include architect Alejandro Díez Martín, who is associated with the technology park project, and architect Jerónimo Padrón López, who is involved in the proposed sports marina. Their participation forms part of the process of defining and developing initiatives that require preliminary studies, technical assessments and a thorough evaluation of their potential.

The project also has a history dating back to its initial proposals and has progressed through different stages of work, public outreach and the search for opportunities. Over the years, we have sought to keep the initiative alive, communicate its objectives and share information about the progress made, recognising that continuity is essential when seeking to turn an idea into a viable proposal. The experience gained, the contacts established and the documentation prepared provide a foundation for further work, although important steps remain to be taken.

In this context, we are preparing to hold the second presentation events for the project, scheduled for 2026. Our intention is to organise them in person while also offering the possibility of following them online, making it easier for interested people in other locations to participate. These events should provide an opportunity to explain how the initiatives have evolved, share the information currently available and open new channels of dialogue with professionals, companies, potential partners and others who wish to learn more about the project.

We also believe it is essential to address one of the key requirements for progress realistically: funding for preliminary work. With this in mind, we are exploring various cooperation opportunities, including a crowdfunding initiative with a target of approximately €60,000. The funds would contribute towards preliminary studies and feasibility work. This amount represents an indicative fundraising target; it is not money that we consider to have already been raised, nor does it guarantee that the projects will be carried out. Before any further development is considered, the relevant technical, economic, administrative and environmental conditions will need to be assessed.

We believe that an initiative of this kind must progress through clearly defined stages, with realistic objectives and transparent information about its needs and possibilities. The purpose of these efforts is therefore to ensure that the project can be presented, studied and assessed by potential partners, without anticipating outcomes that will depend on future decisions and evaluations. The involvement of specialist professionals, interested organisations and potential sponsors could help determine which actions are viable and which may need to be revised or adapted.

The experience of established companies such as Mercadona reminds us that every major business success is built on a combination of vision, sustained effort, adaptability and organisation. Naturally, our project differs considerably in scale and circumstances, but we can draw a common lesson: ideas need planning and commitment if they are to become genuine opportunities. They also require people who are willing to work together, analyse challenges and seek solutions with the future in mind.

For this reason, Parque Tecnológico Playa Paraíso 2010-Adeje aims to continue promoting its proposals and exploring possible forms of cooperation with companies, professionals and organisations that may be interested in learning more about them. The intention is not to draw direct comparisons with major corporations or to suggest that our initiatives are guaranteed to become reality. Rather, we hope to learn from experiences that demonstrate the importance of maintaining a clear direction, working consistently and building relationships that make progress possible.

Our objective is to continue taking steps towards ensuring that the proposals for the technology park and the future sports marina with its marine research centre can be assessed with the necessary rigour. The forthcoming presentation events, the dissemination of information and the search for support for preliminary studies are all part of this process. We hope that sharing the work carried out so far and the possibilities we are exploring will help generate interest, encourage dialogue and open up new opportunities for collaboration.

“AI for Your Business: From Idea to Action” Conference: Parque Tecnológico Playa Paraíso 2010-Adeje at the TEA

On Thursday, 8 October 2026, the TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes hosted the conference “IA para tu negocio: de la idea a la acción” (“AI for Your Business: From Idea to Action”), organized by Prensa Ibérica (El Día) and BBVA. As coordinator of the Parque Tecnológico Playa Paraíso 2010-Adeje initiative, I had the opportunity to attend by invitation of the organizers, for which I am grateful on behalf of our entire drafting team.

Guest reception began at 09:15 and the conference at 09:30. The event set out to show, in a practical, simple and useful way, how artificial intelligence can transform a business, offering inspiration, tools and success stories from experts and representatives of the innovation ecosystem.

The conference was closed by José Luis Izquierdo, known as Mago More, who, despite the name, claims to do everything except magic. With more than thirty years devoted to making people laugh, he has become a leading voice on productivity and time management, which he shares through talks, corporate events and courses. He is the author of a book that has reached more than 100,000 readers and 23 editions, and he hosts the podcast “Las historias del Mago More” (“Mago More’s Stories”), conversations with people from all walks of life recorded in front of a live audience. His proposal, to gain time and devote it to what truly matters, aligns with the practical approach of a conference designed to bring artificial intelligence into the everyday life of businesses.

For us it was a unique experience and an excellent opportunity to present the initiatives we are carrying out in Playa Paraíso, in the municipality of Adeje. The regional press has already reported on the growing role of AI in Canarian businesses, and the event itself was covered in El Día on Sunday, 11 October.

As an example of what this technology can bring to a territorial project, we present an AI-generated recreation of the future sports marina that our team is planning in Playa Paraíso, near the Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife. It is a visual preview created by our marketing and outreach team that reflects our vision for the area, one of the most prominent in the south of the island: it was recognized as the best tourist micro-destination in Tenerife in 2021.

We will continue to cover this event on our blog, where we will publish photos and videos from the conference. We invite anyone interested in the progress of the initiative to follow us on our channels and to consult the links we include below.
