The Gran Hotel Taoro reopens its doors

The Gran Hotel Taoro, located in the heart of Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, is a historic landmark that has witnessed the evolution of tourism in the Canary Islands. Opened in 1893 as Spain's first grand hotel, this establishment has survived devastating fires and three wars, establishing itself as a symbol of resilience and splendour. Designed by French architect Adolphe Coquet, the Gran Hotel Taoro was conceived as a luxury retreat for the European aristocracy and British bourgeoisie. Its elegant architecture and lush gardens made it a coveted destination, welcoming renowned personalities such as Agatha Christie, King Alfonso XIII, the Duke and Duchess of Kent, and German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer.

Throughout its history, the hotel has faced numerous challenges. In 1975, it closed its doors as a hotel and, three years later, was converted into a casino. However, the passage of time and lack of maintenance caused considerable deterioration to the building, leading to the casino being moved to the Lago Martiánez area in 2006 in order to revitalise the area and preserve its architectural heritage. In 2019, the Cabildo de Tenerife took over the management of the Gran Hotel Taoro with the aim of restoring it and turning it into a tourist and cultural landmark on the island. After extensive renovation, it will reopen on 15 September as a five-star urban hotel complex, seeking to restore it to its original splendour and adapt it to the needs of contemporary tourism.

The first edition of the Culinary Hotel Awards, to be held on 13 October at the Gran Hotel Taoro in Puerto de la Cruz, will reward gastronomic excellence in Canary Islands hotels, highlighting haute cuisine, service and innovation in different categories. With fifteen categories and five finalists in each, the awards will recognise everything from the best international cuisine to chefs, sommeliers, maître d's and hotel managers, as well as rooftop bars, brunches, boutique hotels and sustainable initiatives. The nominees include leading establishments and professionals in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, many of them with awards such as Michelin stars or Repsol suns, reflecting the key role they play in consolidating the Canary Islands as a first-rate gastronomic destination.

In short, the Gran Hotel Taoro is much more than an architectural structure, as it offers a living testimony to the history of Tenerife. Its ability to adapt and be reborn after every adversity highlights the resilient spirit of the island. With its upcoming reopening, the hotel is expected to regain its status as a luxury destination and cultural meeting point, reaffirming its place in the collective memory of the Canary Islands and continuing its legacy as a symbol of elegance and resilience.

On behalf of our business initiatives, we would like to congratulate the Cabildo de Tenerife on the reopening of the Gran Hotel Taoro, and the organisers of the Culinary Hotel Awards for promoting an initiative that highlights the importance of gastronomy in achieving excellence in the tourism sector.
