Fashion, tourism and sustainability: the 9th Tenerife Fashion Beach Costa Adeje

The Tenerife Fashion Beach Costa Adeje (TFBCA) held its ninth edition from 21 to 26 September in the south of the island. Promoted by the Cabildo de Tenerife and Adeje Town Council, it is the leading swimwear fashion event in the Canary Islands. Approaching its tenth anniversary, it set out to reinvent its origins, with local design and sustainability as its main themes. One of the novelties was the earlier dates.

The programme went well beyond the catwalk: a creation workshop for aspiring swimwear entrepreneurs, the Fashion Forum with Canarian influencers, the inclusive Fresh Face casting in Adeje's Plaza de España and an accessories market at The Duke Shop. A "Plastic Free" beach action at Playa del Duque and Torviscas removed single-use plastics and swapped reusable bottles for tickets to the show. The ocean cause and the involvement of local people ran through the whole week.

The grand finale was the Designers' Runway at Playa del Duque Norte, with eleven swimwear labels and accessory brands from the islands' warm-weather fashion programmes. For the first time, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, Lanzarote and La Gomera were all represented together. More than a fashion show, the TFBCA works as a tourism showcase and a boost for talent, jobs and training around Canarian fashion. Here are the news pieces and posts where you can follow it.

Tenerife bets on the heat of the Earth: geothermal energy gains ground as the energy of the future

Tenerife has taken a historic step in its search for new energy sources. Deep drilling in the municipality of Vilaflor de Chasna, located in the high midlands of the island and shaped by successive eruptions of the Teide volcanic complex, has for the first time provided direct evidence of heat, water above 150 degrees, and rock permeability at a depth of 2,300 meters — the three elements essential for a geothermal system to be viable. The drilling, which began in May and aims to reach 3,000 meters, is being led by the public-private consortium Energía Geotérmica de Canarias (EGC), made up of the Cabildo de Tenerife through the Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables (ITER), Involcan, the Canary Islands energy company DISA, and Iceland's Reykjavik Geothermal, which brings its international expertise to the project.

Geothermal energy involves harnessing this internal heat of the Earth to generate electricity in a stable and renewable way, without depending on the availability of sunlight or wind as solar and wind power do. For the Canary Islands, an archipelago that barely reaches 20% renewables in its energy mix and still relies heavily on imported fossil fuels, this characteristic is especially valuable: it would bring energy autonomy, reduce the cost of hydrocarbons, and contribute significantly to decarbonizing the territory. In fact, it has been known since the 1970s that the Canary Islands are the only Spanish territory with high-enthalpy geothermal potential, thanks to their volcanic origin. Enthalpy is a thermodynamic quantity that represents the total amount of energy (heat) a system can exchange with its surroundings under constant pressure. In the context of geothermal energy, the term “high enthalpy” refers to reservoirs with very high temperatures (above 150°C), which are the ones that allow electricity to be generated efficiently; “low enthalpy” reservoirs, with lower temperatures, are used mainly for heating/cooling or direct thermal applications.

If the research drilling in Vilaflor de Chasna confirms the potential detected, Tenerife could see its first geothermal power generation plant come online around 2030, with an estimated investment of 86 million euros and a planned capacity of 5 megawatts, which would avoid the consumption of around 72,000 barrels of oil per year. The project, which would be located between three and seven kilometers from the initial drilling site depending on the potential detected, also envisions burying part of the infrastructure underground and making use of existing roads to minimize its impact on the surroundings. Even so, those in charge urge caution: the project is currently only in the research drilling phase, not the construction of a plant, and the economic feasibility study for the plant in Vilaflor de Chasna is the key tool for determining whether the project will ultimately be profitable.

Beyond Tenerife, the rest of the archipelago is watching the process closely. La Palma and Gran Canaria have also been the subject of geothermal potential studies funded by the IDAE, though with less progress than Tenerife, which has managed to coordinate public and private resources and attract foreign investment more quickly. For ITER, geothermal energy represents a strategic opportunity of the first order: continuous power, virtually zero emissions, and a much smaller land footprint than other electricity generation infrastructure. If the timeline holds, the Canary Islands could become the first region in Spain to commercialize deep geothermal energy, a milestone that would mark a turning point in the islands' energy model.

The engineers on the drafting team for the Parque Tecnológico Playa Paraíso project have considered the possibility of obtaining geothermal energy at the Las Cancelas estate, following soil test pits carried out on the site. This possibility opens up an interesting avenue for exploring the use of subsurface heat as a complementary energy source within the project, in line with the progress being made elsewhere in Tenerife, such as in Vilaflor de Chasna.

Our business initiatives as training spaces (II)

The drafting team behind the two business initiatives promoted by Parque Tecnológico Playa Paraíso 2010-Adeje is currently working on the models and preliminary studies that will be presented at the project's second dissemination conference. This conference, aimed at public administrations, the business sector and the general public, seeks to showcase the progress of both proposals for the Playa Paraíso site in Adeje, and will feature a live and streamed presentation by the architects responsible for drafting each initiative.

With this milestone in mind, the project aims to open a training space for students completing their studies at universities and vocational training (FP) centers in the Canary Islands. The idea is for them to join as non-employment training interns, under the direction of the corresponding drafting architect and with the supervision of a tutor appointed by their university or academic center, following the usual model of agreements between academic centers, the Government of the Canary Islands and companies, which are published regularly in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC). Although the initiative is not yet incorporated as a company, the governing agreement could be formalized under the direction of one of our drafting architects, who are indeed registered as businesses.

The student profile of interest to the drafting team is broad. Among university degrees, we are particularly interested in students of Law, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Architecture, Tourism, Business Administration, Geography, Economics and Sociology; in vocational training, interest focuses on Digital Marketing and Social Media, IT, 3D design, and gardening and floristry, among other specialties that may prove useful. A list will be compiled for these students, gathering basic contact details — phone number and email — along with a brief summary of their field of study and the institution where each student is completing their education.

Anyone interested in taking part can get in touch by emailing the project coordinator, Miguel Muñoz, stating the field they are training in, their academic institution, and a brief CV. Contact can be made via miguelproyecto@hotmail.es or miguelproyecto6@gmail.com, or simultaneously via WhatsApp at 648744937. Once a request is received, the team will get in touch to review each candidate's profile in relation to the initiatives underway.

All of this information will be gathered on the project's blog, which already features the list of professionals who have joined the drafting team and the sponsors supporting the initiative. A new folder will be added to that same space listing the students joining under the training internship modality, so that the growth of the team is publicly documented ahead of the upcoming presentation conference.
