The first tourist tax in the Canary Islands will be levied in Masca

From the summer of 2024, the first tourist tax in the Canary Islands will begin to be levied in the area of the Masca ravine, which is part of the Teno Rural Park. The aim is for this measure to serve as a precedent for the introduction of an eco-tax which, from 1 January 2025, will begin to be levied in the main protected natural areas of Tenerife.

In this way, the jetty will be reopened, which has been closed since 2018, allowing entry to and exit from the Masca ravine. This infrastructure will not only make it possible to control the entry and exit of tourists to the area, but will also eliminate the need to climb up the ravine after descending it in order to leave this spot, which has frequently caused various accidents and rescues. Access will be limited to 275 people per day, or an annual total of 100,000, and the tourist tax will be charged only for non-residents of the island. According to Rosa Dávila, president of the Cabildo of Tenerife, the public company Tragsa will be in charge of collecting the fee.

From our business initiatives, we applaud this measure to contribute to the sustainable development of tourism in the Canary Islands and to the care of marine ecosystems. We also believe that the construction of a jetty or similar infrastructure could fit in with our project to build a sports marina and a marine research centre in the vicinity of the Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife, as a solution with a reduced environmental impact. Finally, we would like to congratulate the Cabildo of Tenerife for its commitment to the management of the island's natural areas.
