The relevance of the blue economy in the Canary Islands

The blue economy has consolidated its relevance in the Canary Islands, contributing 7.18% to the regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2022, which translates into a production of 3.5 billion euros. This growth reflects the importance of marine-maritime activities in the economic development of the archipelago.

The blue economy in the Canary Islands is made up of ten sectors: fishing, aquaculture, marine biotechnology, marine renewable energies, desalination, ports and port services, maritime transport, ship repair and offshore services, nautical tourism and cruises. Of these, the port sector is the one that makes the greatest contribution to GDP, with 1.1 billion euros, followed by nautical tourism, which contributes more than 800 million euros.

In addition to its economic impact, the blue economy generates 8% of employment in the Canary Islands, demonstrating its fundamental role in the creation of jobs and in the economic sustainability of the region. All these activities promote the diversification of the Canary Islands' economy, reducing the strong dependence on the tourism sector and taking advantage of the enormous potential of the archipelago's marine resources.

From our business initiatives, we want to contribute to the development of the blue economy with our project to create a sports marina in the vicinity of the Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife, designed by the Canarian architect Jerónimo Padrón López. This project is based on Port Adriano, the marina designed by the French architect and decorator Philippe Starck on the coast of Majorca. On the other hand, the tourist area of Puerto Colón (Adeje) could be connected to Playa Paraíso by means of the appropriate tourist infrastructure, which would enable this whole area (Puerto Colón and Playa Paraíso) to become one of the most powerful poles of attraction for visitors in the south of Tenerife. For this reason, in April 2018 our architect, Jerónimo Padrón, met with various professionals in the area of Playa Paraíso, in order to exchange ideas for the development of the model of a future marina in this area.

As an example of the importance of the blue economy in the Canary Islands, in March 2024, our coordinator, Miguel Muñoz, and the lawyer and collaborator Ramiro Rosón visited the fishing market and pier of Los Abrigos (Granadilla de Abona). This port area offers a model of sustainable use of marine resources, due to its lower environmental impact, and an alternative for Playa Paraíso if the creation of a conventional marina in the area is not viable. In this sense, our architect will study the best alternative for the future marina of Playa Paraíso.
